Where Can I Get My Custom Key Cut?

Where Can I Get My Custom Key Cut?

Your new Keys have just arrived and they’re exactly what you were looking for. Now, you just need to get your current house keys copied over to your new Custom Keys.

This process only costs a few dollars, and because we use industry standard KW1 or SC1 blanks for all our Custom Keys, just about any local locksmith or independent hardware store can do it for you.

The Trusted Locksmith

Call on the professionals. We generally recommend using a locksmith as the best choice. This is because they’re licensed, have the proper equipment, and they have the most experience dealing with unique key shapes like the ones we design. But there is another option depending on your location and schedule that may be more convenient.

Local Locksmith

Local Hardware Store

Your local independent hardware store can also copy your existing key over to your new Custom Key. The only potential issue to keep in mind is the experience of the operator.

Sometimes, it’s just the sales clerk or cashier that operates the key-cutting machine at a hardware store, and they may lack experience when it comes to working with custom key shapes like ours.

This generally won’t be a problem, and if you ask them if your key will be an issue, they should be able to give you an honest answer up front.

In most cases, the answer will be “yes”. Just tell them you have a standard KW1 or SC1 blank, but it has a custom key head design. They’ll know exactly what that means, and will be able to give you an answer.

Local Hardware Store

We suggest giving them a quick call before driving over so you can confirm they’ll be able to work with your key.

Your local hardware store is also usually open later and on weekends, which is sometimes more convenient than a locksmith.

Big Box Retailers

Big Box hardware stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot usually have a self-service key kiosk located somewhere on the property. These self-service kiosks only work with the blank keys already contained inside the machine. You can’t add your own Custom Keys into the machine to be copied.

This means those self-service kiosks won’t work for our keys.

Tips if You Decide to Use a Locksmith

If you decide to go with a locksmith but don’t know how to find one, a simple Google search for “Locksmith near me” will work just fine.

Look for a locksmith that works with residential clients and house keys/locks. Some locksmiths specialize in automotive keys or business clients, so you may want to avoid those.

Some locksmiths will have a portable key-copying machine that they can bring right to your home or work. These are generally called mobile locksmiths, and it's an added convenience, but they will charge more than if you just drove to their location to get your key copied.

Overall, a locksmith is the best choice, but your local independent hardware store will also work just fine if that’s easier.

Just avoid the self-service kiosks at the big box retailers and you should be able to get your new Custom Keys copied in just a few minutes.
